About the Department

The Department of German and Scandinavian Studies is the oldest university department in Bulgaria that is engaged in research and instruction in the languages, literatures and cultures of the German-speaking countries and the countries of the Nordic region. The main scholarly fields that the members of the Department work in are theoretical and applied linguistics, comparative and specialised literary studies, translation studies, history and theory of culture, and area studies. The Department maintains active partnerships with multiple scholarly and educational institutions in Bulgaria and abroad.

The two Sections of the Department are German Philology with a Scandinavian Elective Module and Scandinavian Studies. There are currently about 200 students enrolled in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes of the Department.

There are 26 lecturers permanently employed in the Department, including 15 specialists in German Studies and 11 specialists in Scandinavian Studies. Among them are also lecturers from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
