Generative grammar in the teaching of Norwegian and Swedish to Bulgarian students

Implementation period: 2023 – .

The goal of the project is the experimental application of visual models from generative linguistics in the teaching of Norwegian or Swedish as a foreign language. At its initial stage, the project is based on the book Language as a Superpower (Språket som superkraft) by Professor Kristin Melum Eide of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Areas of research:

  1. To what extent can the teaching in accordance with models from generative grammar be combined with the traditional teaching of morphological and syntactic rules in Norwegian and Swedish?
  2. To what extent can the teaching of models from generative grammar reinforce and activate the conceptual apparatus used by the students, the correct use of linguistic terminology and the understanding of grammatical metalanguage?
  3. To what extent would the teaching of models from generative grammar help and facilitate the teaching of phenomena in Norwegian grammar that pose problems for foreigners, such as:
  • The place of the finite verb in main and dependent clauses
  • The place of the clause adverbial in main and dependent clauses
  • The place of the indirect object and the corresponding prepositional phrases
  • Double definiteness in the noun phrase
